Douw Henry Fonda was born in Gloversville in 1877, in a region where the surname had long been familiar. By the early twentieth century, the world of work available to his generation had changed. He went on to study at Columbia University, and the family archive identifies him as a founder of the Fonda-Haupt Company, an advertising business. The surviving summary gives the outlines of the career, though not the day-to-day workings of his firm.

His work also led into municipal affairs. The archive records twelve years of service on the board of trustees of Plandome, on Long Island, followed by four years as mayor. That sequence describes a form of service quite different from the colonial committees and wartime offices encountered in earlier chapters: the ongoing business of a twentieth-century village, where decisions about community life were made through elected or appointed local institutions.

We do not have a contemporary diary telling us how he balanced business and government, or precisely what persuaded him to serve. We can nevertheless follow a verifiable outline in the family compilation: a Gloversville upbringing, university education, a venture in advertising, and sustained participation in local affairs. In one career, the family’s story had moved from the Mohawk country into metropolitan commerce and civic administration.
