Ferdinand Wiggins Fonda was born September 23, 1839, in Saratoga Springs. Census and city-directory records place him in the commercial life of Saratoga before his career became associated with petroleum.

His genealogy notes identify him as an oil producer and connect him with oil activity in Pennsylvania and Kentucky. That timing places his working life in the first generations of the American petroleum industry, when wells, leases, transport, refining, and speculation were transforming regional economies.

Business and public life

Fonda’s career was not confined to oil. Earlier Saratoga directories place him in dry goods, and he served as a town trustee in 1868–1869. Later records take him to Jamestown, Albany, and New York City, reflecting the mobility of a businessman whose interests were no longer tied to one local market.

He died in Manhattan on February 22, 1919, and was buried back in Saratoga Springs. That return to his hometown is a useful frame for a career that reached from an established resort community into one of the defining new industries of the nineteenth century.

The genealogy contains more business detail than a short profile needs. For Stories, the central subject is the transition itself: a Saratoga merchant entering the uncertain, expanding world of early oil production.
