Modern Worldwide Distribution

The principal international surname database used for this study estimates 6,093 people bearing the surname Fonda. Its underlying distribution dataset is dated 2014, so these figures are best regarded as a modern worldwide estimate rather than a current census.

One Surname, Several Possible Origins

The worldwide distribution of the name should not be interpreted as the distribution of a single family.

The Dutch-American line

The American Fonda lineage documented on this website descends principally from Jellis (Jelles) Douwes, who emigrated from the Netherlands to New Netherland with his family in the mid-seventeenth century.

An important clue is the couple's 1641 marriage banns. The record identifies them as Jelles Douwes and Hester Douwedr, using Dutch patronymic forms rather than the surname Fonda. Douwes means “son of Douw,” while Douwedr means “daughter of Douw.” There is no evidence that Jellis and Hester were related; the patronymics indicate only that both happened to have fathers named Douw. The Fonda surname appears in the family records only later.

Implication: this documentary evidence weakens older traditions claiming that Jellis arrived in Holland already bearing an Italian, French or Spanish Fonda surname. No documentary connection between the seventeenth-century Dutch-American family and the Italian/Slovenian Fonda population has been established.

The Italian-Istrian line

A separate, long-established Italian-Istrian Fonda population is centered on Trieste and the former Istrian coast, particularly the Pirano/Piran area. Its modern concentration is so strong that roughly seven of every ten estimated Italian Fondas live in the former Province of Trieste.

DNA evidence

Y-chromosome testing provides an additional, although still limited, line of evidence. The compiler of this Fonda genealogy, a documented paternal-line descendant of the Dutch-American family, has tested as Y-DNA haplogroup I1. Earlier Fonda DNA-project comparisons also included an individual from a Slovenian Fonda line and an Italian Fondi tester who were reported as R1b.

Those results are consistent with separate paternal origins, but the sample is too small to prove that all Dutch-American Fondas are I1 or that all Italian/Slovenian Fondas are R1b. Haplogroups are also broad prehistoric paternal branches found across many modern populations; labels such as “Anglo-Saxon” or “Basque” are useful historical shorthand but should not be interpreted as precise ethnic identities.

The strongest conclusion therefore remains the documentary one: there is presently no demonstrated genealogical link between the Dutch-American and Italian/Slovenian Fonda lines. Additional Y-DNA testing of documented male-line descendants from both populations could test that conclusion much more rigorously.

Other world populations

Modern databases report hundreds of people with the exact Fonda surname in Niger, Cameroon and Tanzania, as well as a substantial population in Indonesia. No genealogical relationship between these populations and either the Dutch-American or Trieste-Istrian lines has been established.

These results are not simply caused by combining similarly spelled surnames. Major surname databases generally index Fonda, Funda, Fanda and other variants separately.

For these reasons, the figures on this page describe the worldwide distribution of the surname Fonda, not the descendants of one common ancestor.

United States Distribution

Modern U.S. surname estimates place the Fonda population at approximately 1,700–1,800 people. MyNameStats estimates about 1,816 people nationally and provides the following state distribution. These are statistical estimates rather than a contemporary enumeration.

California270
Florida132
Pennsylvania109

North Carolina48

New York remains the largest center of the Fonda surname, followed by California and Florida. This pattern is remarkably consistent with the Fonda.org residential-directory survey compiled in 2004.

About Nevada: Forebears reports an anomalously large Nevada concentration, but an independent U.S. state-level database estimates only nine Fondas there. Because the latter pattern is much more consistent with the 2004 directory survey and known family geography, the Forebears U.S. state distribution has not been used for this study.

The American surname population should not be assumed to consist entirely of descendants of Jellis Douwes. Later immigrants, African-American Fonda families, and other unrelated Fonda lines are represented in the United States as well.

Italy and the Trieste-Istrian Population

Italy is the third-largest modern center of the Fonda surname, with an estimated 836 people. Its distribution is exceptionally concentrated in the northeast.

AreaEstimated Fonda population
City of Trieste566
Rest of former Province of Triesteabout 30
Other Friuli-Venezia Giuliaabout 67
Rest of Italyabout 173
Italy total836

The former Province of Trieste contains an estimated 596 Fondas. Approximately 71% of all Italian Fondas are therefore concentrated there, with about 68% of the national population in Trieste city itself.

This closely matches the earlier Fonda.org survey: in 2004, 160 of 216 Italian Fonda household listings — 74% — were in Trieste. The agreement between two very different datasets strongly confirms Trieste as the historic and modern center of the Italian Fonda surname.

Smaller Fonda populations have historically been documented around Venice and elsewhere in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with scattered families in Milan, Rome, Genoa, Florence and other Italian cities. Much of this distribution appears consistent with migration outward from the Trieste-Istrian area.

The Original 2004 Worldwide Survey

The first worldwide Fonda surname distribution study published on this website was compiled in 2004 from international residential telephone and address directories. It identified approximately 909 residential listings worldwide.

Those figures remain useful as an historical snapshot, but they should not be compared numerically with the modern estimates above. The two surveys measure different things.

The appearance of sizable Fonda populations in Africa and Asia in modern surname databases therefore does not necessarily represent growth or migration since 2004. Much of the difference may result from greatly improved geographic coverage.

Of the 216 Italian residential listings, 160 were in Trieste. Smaller concentrations appeared in Venice, Rome, Milan, Muggia, Monfalcone and elsewhere. That 74% Trieste share in 2004 is remarkably close to the approximately 71% Trieste Province share found in the later international surname data.

Research Notes & Sources

Surname-distribution databases are valuable for identifying geographic patterns, but their figures should be viewed as estimates rather than precise present-day population counts.

Research remains open regarding the origins of Fonda populations found in Africa, Asia and other regions. Future documentary and Y-DNA research may help determine whether they represent independent surname origins, transliterations, historic migration, or presently unidentified relationships.
